Ante Razov named new Sounders assistant coach

Long-time Major League Soccer standout Ante Razov has been named a new Sounders assistant coach, the club announced Thursday.

Razov, who retired in 2009 after a 14-year professional career and is MLS’ fourth all-time leading scorer, spent the last two-plus years coaching the Galaxy U-18s in the L.A. Academy.

“I’d kind of been working my way up since my playing days,” Razov said in a phone interview Thursday. “… I wanted to work with the youth and work my way from the bottom up, understanding coaching philosophy.”

Razov, 40, played for Los Angeles, Chicago, Columbus, New York and Chivas USA during his lengthy MLS career, suiting up for current Seattle head coach Sigi Schmid while in college at UCLA. Razov was capped 25 times by the U.S. men’s national team, scoring six goals and helping the U.S. to the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup title. He also, notably, was the last college player to earn a United States men’s national team cap until Mercer Island native and Stanford sophomore Jordan Morris did the same against Ireland in November.

Razov says it’s premature to draw too much of a comparison with old college coach Schmid.

“I believe in discipline, tactical discipline and structure,” Razov said. “… The biggest thing in our training back then, was every day in practice, it was about who wanted to win more.

“It’s a little too early to get into philosophies and stuff like that. But we’re both into winning.”
