Sounders trade defender Eriq Zavaleta to Toronto

Defender Eriq Zavaleta, Seattle’s first-round pick in the 2013 SuperDraft, has been traded to Toronto FC in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2016 draft, the Sounders announced Monday.

Zavaleta, 22, was on loan with Chivas USA this past season after making five appearances for Seattle during his rookie appearance in 2013. The Indiana product was the 2012 Big Ten Player of the Year while in college before being selected with the No. 10 pick in the draft. The Sounders declined Zavaleta’s contract option at the end of last season.

“We want to thank Eriq for his service to our club,” Sounders coach Sigi Schmid said. “We wish him the best of luck in Toronto and throughout his career.”

Said Toronto GM Tim Bezbatchenko in the TFC release: “Adding a player like Eriq gives us another defender with MLS experience. He is a young and versatile player with the ability to both defend and attack.”

The Sounders continue training at Starfire Sports Complex through Wednesday before heading down to Southern California for a nine-day camp at Mt. San Antonio College.
