Weekend Watch: Must-see matches from around the world

Apologies on the Weekend Watch layoff – unfortunately timed travel plans have gotten in the way. It, right alongside the Old Firm, returns with a vengeance.

South Korea vs. Australia, AFC Asian Cup final, Saturday at 1 a.m.

At long last, one for the night owls: The Koreans are gunning for their first Asian Cup title since 1960, while host Australia is looking for its first overall after jumping over from the Oceania federation in 2006.

Congo vs. Congo DR, African Cup of Nations quarterfinals, Saturday at 8 a.m.

The Congolese derby will improve your geography game, if nothing else. Congo, which lies to the northwest of its larger, more well-known neighbor, enters this game as surprising favorites after topping Group A.

Chelsea vs. Manchester City, English Premier League, Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

Depending on your viewpoint, this is either a showdown between two balanced, attack-minded heavyweights or two oil-money-financed examples of everything wrong with the modern game. Far be it from me to tell you how to live your life.

Celtic vs. Rangers, Scottish Communities League Cup, Sunday at 5:30 a.m.

Scotland’s most famous rivalry returns after a three-year hiatus. Rangers was relegated from the top division following liquidation in 2012. It has clawed its way back up to the second tier and, on Sunday, gets reacquainted with its old foe.

Ivory Coast vs. Algeria, African Cup of Nations quarterfinals, Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

The two pre-tournament favorites will meet far earlier in Malabo after the Desert Foxes were edged by Ghana for the top spot in Group C. The Ivory Coast is running out of last chances to do right by its golden generation.
