Osvaldo Alonso could miss six-to-eight weeks following successful groin surgery

The Sounders announced Saturday that midfielder Osvaldo Alonso had undergone right groin surgery. On Monday morning, when the team returned to Starfire Sports Complex for training for the first time in a week-and-a-half, coach Sigi Schmid revealed more of what that means for Alonso’s status for the beginning of the season.

Schmid said that the surgery was to clear up some scar tissue that was pushing on Alonso’s nerves.

“We’re really happy that the surgery didn’t have to be more extensive,” Schmid said.

The coach also said, however, that Alonso’s status for Seattle’s first few matches of the season is in jeopardy. The Sounders open the regular season at home against New England on March 8 and host San Jose six days later.

“It’s really sort of a wait-and-see,” Schmid said. “On the outside, he could be out six-to-eight weeks – but that’s the outside. … He could be back out on the practice field in two weeks. We really don’t know.”

Alonso started 33 of Seattle’s 34 MLS regular-season matches last season but missed the first leg of the Western Conference final against Los Angeles with an unrelated injury.

More on this — and on Brad Evans’ possibly permanent position change — to follow.

“The first two games are certainly in jeopardy, but I’m glad we could do it now.”
