Sigi Schmid talks potential changes to the USMNT’s annual January camp

U.S. men’s national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann hinted earlier this week that he might be revamping the team’s annual January camp next year, possibly limiting it to U-23 players ahead of the 2016 Olympics.

With MLS out of season – in contrast to most of the rest of the world – the camp has traditionally been a showcase for domestically based players.

“We have a unique situation in the U.S.,” Sounders coach Sigi Schmid said Wednesday after training at Starfire. “But I also think we’re at a stage where, depending on what happens with when we start practices, maybe we should let the players go through the preseason with the clubs.

“That would maybe free up the national team windows and un-clutter them with MLS games.”

Schmid also said each player’s situation is different, saying that he advised Seattle forward Clint Dempsey to take a break after a packed 2014. Dempsey spent the previous MLS offseason on loan with Fulham in the English Premier League to stay sharp for the World Cup.

“I know there’s been a lot of talk, in terms of the fitness levels and Jurgen being disappointed the offseason and what the other guys do and the other sports,” Schmid said. “I think, when you look at the other sports, they have huge offseasons.

“They have enough off time that they realize, OK, now it’s time to kick it into gear. … For us, each (player) is an individual situation.”
