Steve Zakuani led the NCAA in scoring at the University of Akron during his sophomore season in 2008 and then became the No. 1 overall pick of Sounders FC in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft.
Over the next 2 1/2 seasons, he became one of the most dangerous midfielders in the league, however, on April 22, 2011, Zakuani’s blossoming career took a major blow as he suffered a fractured right tibia and fibula in a game at Colorado.
Through much hard work and determination, he made an emotional return to action on July 7, 2012.
Following an injury-plagued 2013 with Seattle, he was selected by Portland in the MLS Re-Entry Draft and played what ultimately was his final pro season in 2014. Citing his difficult recovery from several injuries, he retired on Oct. 29.
He released a new book, 500 Days, that chronicles his recovery from the devastating injury in 2011, earlier this week.
Zakuani will be available to answer questions about his playing career, his book project and more in a live chat at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
