Au Revoir Simone, ‘Move In Spectrums’ (Instant Records) | New CDs

After releasing three critically acclaimed albums (and attracting fans like film director David Lynch), all has been quiet on the Au Revoir Simone front since 2009. Now the synth-pop trio — or “dream pop,” as they’ve often been described — is back with their most well-crafted album to date.

Though synthesizers and keyboards can create music that’s emotionless, even sterile, Au Revoir Simone are careful not to neglect the human element; they’re cool, not cold. It helps that the banks of keyboards are offset by the vocals of all three members (Erika Forster, Annie Hart and Heather D’Angelo), whose vivid harmonies range from being upbeat and breezy (as on the opening track, “More Than”) to the melancholy of “Love You Don’t Know Me.”

And the beauty of the music makes the lyrics take a bit longer to sink in. The beguiling melodies provide excellent cover; the title of “Just Like A Tree” makes one think of a pleasant ramble through the countryside, until you realize the lyrics are actually issuing a warning: “Stay away from me.”

Au Revoir Simone will appear October 27 at Neumos.
