Three Seattle-area high school jazz bands have been selected to perform at the Swing Central Jazz High School Jazz Band Competition, part of the Savannah Music Festival, in Savannah, Georgia, this March.

The bands are from Ballard High School, Mountlake Terrace High School and Newport High School, in Bellevue. Only a dozen bands were chosen to perform and study at Swing Central Jazz. The other groups are from California, Michigan, Colorado, Montana, Tennessee and Florida.

For three days, March 26-28, students will work with jazz masters including pianist Marcus Roberts and trumpeter Terrell Stafford; perform showcases; compete; and attend performances at the Savannah Music Festival.

The three top-scoring bands will compete for the Faircloth Award ($5000 for first, $2500 for second and $1000 for third place) and perform in the opening set at the SMF production “Kind of Blue,” with  Jason Marsalis, Roberts, Wycliffe Gordon, Christian McBride and others.
