Kenny G keeps it smooth at Jazz Alley | Concert preview

Ken6DF3There was a time when Jazz Alley would have been laughed out of town for booking smooth jazz titan Kenny G, but that was before the number of jazz musicians who could fill this A-list club shrank so drastically that it had to embrace soul, smooth and world music acts just to survive. Whatever your views on that compromise, there’s no arguing that the Seattle-bred soprano saxophonist is popular — he has sold more than 75 million albums — and that despite his glib and feckless solos, he has a solid grasp of soul, thanks to his early work in R&B.

Kenny G appears with Robert Damper (piano/keys), Daniel Bejarano (drums), John Raymond (guitar) and Vail Johnson (bass) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, May 8-11, and also at 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 9-10 at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, 2033 Sixth Ave., Seattle; $54 (206-441-9729 or www.jazzalley.com).
