The Mount Si High School Jazz Band (Robert Wachtendonk)

The Mount Si High School Jazz Band (Robert Wachtendonk)

It’s May, and that means Seattle-area high-school jazz bands are once again competing in New York at the Essentially Ellington competition.

This year, usual suspects Garfield and Roosevelt are in the running, but newcomer Mount Si is tootling, too. Garfield and Roosevelt have won first place at EE a total of seven times (Garfield, 4; Roosevelt, 3).

The competition will be webcast live. Here’s the schedule (all times PST):

Thursday:
10:30 a.m.-noon, welcome, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra “open rehearsal” and Q&A with artistic director Wynton Marsalis

Friday:
11 a.m.-3 p.m., competition Part I (includes Mount Si and Roosevelt)

Saturday:
7 a.m.-8:30 a.m., competition Part II; 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m., competition Part III (includes Garfield); 1 p.m., announcement of top three bands; 4:30 p.m., concert, awards ceremony and announcement of first-, second- and third-place winners.
