alt-J’s pop with an edge | Concert preview

“This Is All Yours,” the new LP from the British industrial-rock act alt-j, is the latest reminder that pop music need not be sweet. It can be abrasive and haunting, even nasty. Alt-j has a deep war chest that includes heavy-handed guitar riffs, militant drum cadences, large helpings of metal and plenty of soul. The album’s standout track, “Left Hand Free,” makes you want to bang your head and dance in equal measure. It’s an impressive feat that alt-j manages by wielding its disparate tools with restraint, remaining very much a pop band — but a smart, curious one at that.

7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 15, Paramount Theatre, 911 Pine St., Seattle; $39.50, all ages (206-682-1414 or stgpresents.org).
