Never mind Halloween. Friday, Oct. 31, Town Hall’s Global Rhythms series hosts an act that requires no masks or monkey business, when the great Tex-Mex accordion master Flaco Jimenez joins San Antonio conjunto Los Texmaniacs in a concert of traditional as well as rocked up Tejano fare that should be an unqualified treat.
Jimenez, a Grammy award winner and National Heritage Fellow who popularized the button accordion beyond its traditional cultural borders, is still going strong at 75. The electric bass- and traps-driven Los Texamaniacs, also Grammy winners, feature dazzling jazz- and classic rock-influenced licks for accordion as well as the 12-string guitar called the bajo sexto. One minute they are crooning over a two-beat bounce in thirds harmony about lonely charros, the next minute they’re tearing up the place as a power quartet.
Not to be missed.
