Dave Matthews Band returns to the Gorge on Aug. 29-31

Dave Matthews will play his annual Labor-Day weekend at the Gorge Amphitheatre on Aug. 29-31. The weekend will feature two headlining sets each evening from the Dave Matthews Band as well as daily performances by Brandi Carlile. The lineup for the second Caravan Stage has yet to be announced.

Brandi Carlile rekindles romance at the Tractor | Concert review

Some shows you mark on your calendar months out, like the epic Pearl Jam show Friday night that was undoubtedly the hottest ticket in town this week.

Brandi Carlile’s thrilling set at the Tractor Saturday was not planned. She stepped in at the last minute for The Lone Bellow, but despite the late notice tickets sold out in a flash, with locals cognizant of the rare opportunity to see Carlile in such an intimate setting.

It didn’t used to be that way for Carlile and her fans. There was a time, Carlile recalled, before the days of social media when she struggled to fill just part of the Tractor, but that was before she was recognized as one of the best singer-songwriters of her generation.

A hell-raising homecoming for Brandi Carlile at the zoo

If Brandi Carlile returned to her hometown to raise a little hell, she came to the right place.

The Woodland Park Zoo amphitheater was packed with longtime fans, friends, family and even some of her high school teachers — sprawled on a meadow gridlocked with blankets and low-back chairs. It was a feel-good, multi-generational concert for those who had followed the Maple Valley singer-songwriter for years.

“It’s good to be home,” she said.

When the summer-touring season ends, Northwest singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile and her band will head up to the San Juan Islands and lock themselves in a cabin.

They’re not necessarily trying to escape the rat race. But isolation and the freedom to experiment could help determine the sound of Carlile’s next album.

“We’re not going to record anything we write because we want to try something different on this record,” the 32-year-old Maple Valley resident said this week in a phone call from California.
