Financial troubles have forced the Comet Tavern, a nightspot that has hosted much of Seattle’s underground music scene in its four decades on Capitol Hill, to shut its doors. As of Wednesday night, the lights were off and a “closed” sign hung in the window.
Emails to Michelle Smith, the club’s talent booker, bounce back with an auto-reply message that says all shows are canceled through the next two weeks. Smith’s email cites “a water bill/lease issue” and says the Comet’s owner, Brian Balodis, is “looking into (a) partnership etc” to save the club. The email doesn’t give details on what that might involve.
