The new EP from ILLFIGHTYOU’s Ugly Frank | New recordings

Last year’s self-titled debut from Tacoma trio ILLFIGHTYOU took them from relative unknowns to one of the best new talents in an already strong local rap climate — and is one of the main reasons why it’s not cool for Seattle people to talk sneeringly about Tacoma anymore. The strongest points about the ILLFIGHTYOU album were…

In its first year, Macefield goes hard on hip-hop

Last night the first Macefield Music Festival — once known as the Seattle Weekly’s Reverb Fest – brought some of Seattle’s brightest talents in beats and raps to Ballard’s Sunset Tavern. While the Weekly’s Reverb often had plenty of local indie/guitar-based offerings, it often fell way short of a well-rounded bill in this department, and Macefield’s organizers should be commended for booking three of the city’s best producers — Kid Smpl, Vox Mod and Keyboard Kid — and three heavy-hitting, fast-rising rap acts — Key Nyata, Jarv Dee and ILLFIGHTYOU – all at the same venue.

Capitol Hill Block Party 2013: Rock ‘n’ roll rules again, with a side of bounce rap

Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne, amidst a blizzard of confetti and smoke effects Sunday night, declared the 16th annual Capitol Hill Block Party “a riot of love,” and the crowd indeed loved him in return. Beginning Friday afternoon and lasting through the weekend, the festival proved yet again to be one of Seattle’s loudest, most sunburned, most crazed parties. (For full photo coverage of the bands, check here. For documentation of Block Party style, check here.)

It’s Capitol Hill Block Party time!

Jammed between chain-link fences on the bar- and venue-lined Pike Street, you push through a sweaty crowd while inhaling secondhand cigarette smoke, feeling the vibrations of amplified noise coming from all directions. As you approach the tucked-away VERA Stage (one of five stages) at Capitol Hill Block Party, a face-painted 22-year-old spills beer on your…

Block Party countdown Q&A: Tacoma tough-guy rappers ILLFIGHTYOU had never heard of CHBP

ILLFIGHTYOU, from left to right, Khris P, Ugly Frank and EvergreenOne (Jesse Gelly)

By Mike Ramos

Tacoma tough-guy rap trio ILLFIGHTYOU — EvergreenOne, Ugly Frank and Khris P — have been in a group together for less than a year, and released their raucous self-titled debut just over a month ago. But their wildly antagonistic lyrics and hard-body beats (all produced by group member Khris P) that range from sneering, cracking new-school boom-bap to booming, skittering modern “trap” spinoffs have been racking up web clicks and blog features, suddenly making them one of the fastest-rising new groups out of the Northwest. We took a short trip down I-5 to catch up with Khris P and Ugly Frank at Tacoma’s Puget Sound Pizza, where everybody waited around for 15 or so minutes before realizing that EvergreenOne wasn’t going to show up. [Editor's Note: Strong language.]

ILLFIGHTYOU play Capitol Hill Block Party Sunday at 4:45 p.m. on the Barboza stage.
