Take 2

A different spin on sports by The Seattle Times staff and readers.

Gonzaga’s gone, so now who are you rooting for?

Gonzaga is out, and Washington and Washington State were never in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

So now who are state hoops fans rooting for?

Are you rooting for the lovable giant killers from Florida Gulf Coast University (and don’t tell me you’d heard of that school before last week)? The first No. 15 seed to make the Sweet 16 stunned second-seeded Georgetown and then ran off seventh-seeded San Diego State.

Or are you rooting for Peyton Siva, the former Franklin High School guard and his top-seeded Louisville Cardinals?

Or are you sticking with the Pac-12 and changing allegiances to root for Arizona or, gasp, the Oregon Ducks? The Ducks, thought to be slapped in the face with a lowly No. 12 seeding, face Louisville on Friday.

There’s also Wichita State, a No. 9 seed that’s another unlikely Sweet 16 team after knocking out Gonzaga. Are you holding a grudge, or rooting for the aptly named Shockers?

Oh, yeah, in all this FGCU noise, remember that LaSalle plays Wichita State on Thursday. LaSalle is seeded No. 13.

And don’t forget about Miami, a two seed that has taken the Hurricanes’ program to places it has never been.

Or maybe you’re rooting for someone else. Some college basketball royalty with NCAA titles next to their names – top-four seeds Indiana, Kansas, Duke, Ohio State, Syracuse, Marquette, Michigan, Michigan State and Florida – are all still alive.
