An injury to a key scorer may have given an unexpected boost to the championship Derby Liberation Front (DLF) won Saturday night in the Rat City Rollergirls Roller Derby League Championships at KeyArena. It beat the Throttle Rockets 204-131.
The injury was not to one of its opponents, but to DLF’s own high-scoring jammer, Muscle Sprouts. She was carried off 13 minutes into the one-hour bout after an explosive block from the Rockets’ Deva StateHer sent her sprawling off the track. At the time, her team led 56-46.
The new champs held the lead at the half, 99-80, but went through five jams without scoring a point to open the second 30-minute period. Trailing 101-99, DLF Coach Ho Chi Danh asked some of his best blockers to step up, put on the jammer’s star and score some points. Rookie Bam!!B, another weapon in the DLF arsenal, and heavy hitters The KZA and Rumble Fist added runs of 25, 13 and 19 while ferocious line play by blockers Yoko Onoudi’nt, Ophelia Mellons and Full Nelson kept Throttle Rocket scoring to a minimum. For the rest of the half, the winners added 105 points, the Rockets, 30.
DLF ended its season undefeated at 4-0.
