11,000 ballots for Eastside voters didn't get mailed

About 11,000 ballots for the Nov. 8 general election weren’t mailed last week because of  a “technical problem” with the King County Elections database.

The ballots, mostly to Eastside voters, were mistakenly not mailed when King County Elections sent out about 1.1 million ballots on Oct. 19. Elections director Sherril Huff, who is on the ballot herself, said in a news release that she “regrets that this event occurred,” but that she was pleased the error was caught.

Voters in more than a dozen cities were affected, with most of them in Kirkland (3,624 ballots not mailed) and Redmond (3,336), said Elections spokeswoman Kim van Ekstrom. The cause of the database problem is not clear, but the ballots will all be in the Saturday mail, she said.

Election staff noticed the problem via calls to the Elections hotline about missing ballots. To report missing ballots, call the hotline at 206-296-VOTE.

Nov. 8 is the last day voters can cast ballots by mail.
