Gregoire: Bring a space shuttle to Seattle

Gov. Chris Gregoire is asking that Seattle get another chance to host a retiring space shuttle, at least temporarily.

In a letter to NASA Administrator Charles Bolden on Friday, Gregoire said two of the sites selected, New York and Los Angeles, face complex fundraising and logistical challenges, and wouldn’t be able to display the shuttles for years.

In contrast, Seattle’s Museum of Flight, one of the losers in the shuttle bidding, has a $11.6 million Space Gallery already complete.

With this year’s end to the nation’s space shuttle program, Bolden in April said the program’s four shuttle vehicles would go to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., the California Science Center in Los Angeles and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York. Read the governor’s letter.

Earlier this month, five members of Washington’s congressional delegation were among 42 members of Congress sending a letter to Bolden expressing concerns with inconsistencies and complications in the New York museum’s plans.

More than half of those who signed the letter represent districts in Texas, which also lost out in the shuttle selection.

Washington representatives signing the letter were Republican Dave Reichert and Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Democrats Jay Inslee, Adam Smith and Rick Larsen.
