Man jumps off I-5 overpass; traffic snarled

Two lanes of Interstate 5 in downtown Seattle were shut down this morning after a man jumped off an overpass in downtown Seattle, according to the Washington State Patrol.

At around 8 a.m. the man was struck by a semi-truck and a car, said Trooper Julie Startup. The man, identified as a 30-year-old from Renton, died and the incident is being investigated as a suicide. Seattle police reported the incident occurred at Pine Street but the State Patrol reported it was at Olive Way.

Traffic going through downtown was exceptionally slow, Startup said. The lanes were reopened shortly after 9 a.m.

Southbound I-5 traffic at right is moving after passing under Yesler Way in downtown Seattle Wednesday morning, but northbound traffic ground nearly to a halt partly because two northbound lanes were shut down due to the incident (Ellen Banner / The Seattle Times).
