An elderly man apparently shot and killedhis ailing wife and then himself in their West Seattle home this morning, according to Seattle police.

Police hostage negotiators and SWAT team members surrounded the house after a man inside called 911 around 3:15 a.m. to say he had shot his wife,  said Seattle police spokesman Mark Jamieson.

Police set  off a type of noisemaker and called to the man over a loudspeaker but did not receive a response, Jamieson said.

Jamieson said police entered the home around 7 a.m. and found the couple dead in a bedroom, an apparent murder-suicide.

Another police official said both were elderly and infirm.

Jamieson said officers are familiar with the home, in the 2600 block of 50th Avenue Southwest, and have had contact with the  man in the past.  He apparently has dementia and is the owner of many firearms, according to police.  Jamieson did not have details about the man’s wife.

A large police response this morning included the SWAT team and two armored vehicles, Jamieson said. Police originally blocked off a large area of the neighborhood but later scaled back the scene.
