Search for man missing in Green River to resume Thursday

Rescue personnel on Thursday morning will resume the search for a fisherman seen struggling in the Green River on Wednesday night.

The 35-year-old Tacoma man was wading across the river with a friend around 6:20 p.m. in nearly waist-deep water when he apparently lost his footing, said King County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. John Urquhart.  Several people tried to rescue the fisherman by reaching out with their fishing poles, and at least one person jumped in after him.  But the current was too swift and the man was swept away on a logjam, Urquhart said.

He was last seen in a stretch of the river in the 11200 block of the Auburn-Black Diamond Road off Highway 18.

Rescue personnel  from Valley Regional and the King County Sheriff’s Office and two other agencies searched the river for more than two hours but did not find the man, according to Kimberly McDonald, public information officer for the fire authority.

Valley Regional crews located and rescued another man who was stranded on the shoreline across the river, McDonald said. He was not injured.

The search for the missing man was suspended due to darkness and unsafe river conditions.

McDonald said the search is scheduled to resume at 11 a.m. Thursday.
