Suspect in jogger attacks pleads not guilty to rape charge

Duane “Eddie” Starkenburg, the man accused of grabbing female joggers and burying his face in their buttocks, has pleaded not guilty to an unrelated charge of first-degree child rape. He remains in the King County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail on the rape charge.

Starkenburg, 46, is scheduled for trial Nov. 29 on two counts of indecent liberties and one count of attempted indecent liberties for the alleged attacks on three female joggers last year and in January in West Seattle’s Lincoln Park. During the follow-up investigation, a Seattle police detective interviewed a woman who claimed Starkenburg had molested her daughter when the girl was 9 or 10.

The alleged victim, now 20, told detectives that Starkenburg offered “a massage” and then molested her, and that he may have molested her more than once.¬† The alleged victim’s mother did not report the molestation to police at the time, according to court documents.

A case-setting hearing on the child-rape charge is scheduled for Oct. 25.

Starkenburg has denied attacking  joggers, claiming he slipped and fell into the women.
