Third new ferry delivered to the state

Washington State Ferries received its third new ferry Monday, three months ahead of schedule.

The 64-car Kennewick was delivered by Vigor Industrial to the ferry system’s Eagle Harbor facility, where it will be outfitted before beginning service in mid-January on the Port Townsend-Coupeville route.

The three ferries, the Chetzemoka, Salish and Kennewick, are part of the Kwa-di Tabil class of ferries.

“This is a major milestone in our vessel replacement program,” David Moseley, head of the state ferries said in a news release. “We’re elated that our partners at Vigor delivered the Kennewick three months ahead of schedule.”

The budget for the three 64-car boats was $213 million. The estimated final cost of the Kennewick was $58.8 million, or $3.8 million under budget. All three boats came in $6.7 million under budget, according to the state.

Construction of the boats, which replace the old Steel Electric Class ferries that were taken out of service in 2007, provided 360 jobs.
