Walk on the viaduct this weekend

Construction workers and others gather on the upper deck of the Alaskan Way Viaduct for the last time Saturday morning. The structure where they are standing will be demolished. (Photo by Ellen M. Banner / THE SEATTLE TIMES)

Everyone feeling nostalgic about the Alaskan Way Viaduct can go for a commemorative walk on the elevated highway from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The viaduct will close for nine days from 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31. During the closure, the south end will be demolished.

The Washington State Department of Transportation is holding Saturday’s commemorative walk on the top deck. It’s billed as a “tweetup” for Twitter users, but we do not believe you are obligated to tweet.

Here is the event invitation from WSDOT.

Parking will be available at the fenced construction site just south of Railroad Way South and on adjacent city streets and in nearby pay lots. You can access the event from Alaskan Way South at South King Street. No pets or bicycles are allowed at the walk.
