Folks have lots to say on the city's bicycle plan

Looking for middle ground in the world of bicyling in Seattle is one tough task. That’s no more apparent than in the comments piling up on the story by Seattle Times staff reporter Mike Lindblom on the city of Seattle’s $300,000 Bicycle Master Plan apparently already reaching obsolescence.

The four-year-old plan, all 174-pages of it put together for then-Mayor Greg Nickels, was supposed to be a 10-year blueprint to help Seattle build a $240 million cycling network as good or better than Portland’s.

Seattle officials are now considering spending an additional $400,000 to revise it’s existing plan.

The comments for the most part fall into two categories: People who don’t care for bicyclists; people who don’t care for politicians or government waste.

Well by all means lets keep up with portland. put a bird on it. I say we rip out I-5 and turn it into a 6 lane bike only path. I’m sure that’ll show everyone we mean business. Bike only business.

I will be moving to Seattle within the next two months from the cycling mecca of the world, Amsterdam. It is really disappointing to read the negative discourse towards cycling occurring in the comments section of this article, especially from the drivers that would benefit from more people commuting by bike. Less traffic, less wear and tear on the streets, less pollution, lower gasoline prices. These things drivers could expect if increased participation in commuting by bike was to occur. I thought the people of Seattle would be more progressive then this….

Let me see… behind door #1: spend $400k for more studying or door #2: spend $400k to actually make some real progress. I’ll take door #2, Monty.

And as for ONLY taxing cars to pay for it, that get’s a ‘nay’ as well. I’m fully in favor of adding bicycle improvements throughout the region as part of the commuting network. But our bicycles should foot a big chunk of the bill. For example I also ride the bus & the train and pay a fare to do so to help fund the transit system.

C’mon cyclists, you mean to tell me you absolutely refuse to pay 20 bucks-a-year and have 100% of that go for cycle improvements? That’s a no-brainer and eminently fair in my book. Those who steadfastly refuse “because I already pay my taxes” are also no-brainers in my book. But hey, maybe that’s just me.
