6 troopers injured during Olympia protests

A protester is removed from the Capitol rotunda by Washington State Patrol troopers after he refused to leave when the building was closed Monday night. Protesters were demonstrating against budget cuts throughout the day. JOHN LOK / THE SEATTLE TIMES

Six Washington State Patrol troopers were injured in Monday’s demonstrations at the state capitol.

Hundreds of protesters disrupted the first day of the Legislature’s special session, many associated with the national Occupy movement. After storming a hearing room, protesters refused to leave the capitol building Monday night until they were hauled out by troopers.

According to the patrol, two troopers received bite injuries and four suffered bumps and bruises.  A state worker caught in a push by protesters received bruised ribs and facial injuries.

The patrol said Monday’s protest cost $96,000, including $76,000 straight time for troopers who would have been working anyway, $12,000 in overtime costs and $8,200 in travel costs for troopers outside Olympia.

Four people were arrested in charges ranging from disorderly conduct to felony assault. In addition, 30 people received trespass warnings, which says they could face arrest if they return to the capitol campus in the next month.
