Kent boy, 15, charged with 2 rapes

Rape and kidnapping charges have been filed against a 15-year-old Kent boy who is suspected of two violent rapes last month along Kent-Kangley Road, the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said this morning.

Prosecutors will seek to prosecute the boy in adult court rather than juvenile court.

“It is rare that someone this young is accused of serious crimes of predatory sexual violence. Because the defendant is a few months shy of 16, we will proceed with a hearing to convince the Juvenile Court to relinquish jurisdiction,” King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg said in a news release. “I believe a case this serious belongs in adult court.”

The boy has been charged with two counts of first-degree rape and and two counts of first-degree kidnapping with sexual motivation. Because he is 15, charges will be first handled in Juvenile Court.

If convicted in Juvenile Court, the defendant could face incarceration up to his 21st. If convicted in adult court, the minimum sentence range is 28 to nearly 36 years in prison with a potential maximum sentence of up to life in prison. Under Washington state law, an offender who commits a serious violent offense is automatically charged in adult court if they are 16 or 17 years old.

The alleged rapes occurred Oct. 29 and 30. Both victims were walking home from bus stops when they were approached by a youth, who threatened to shoot them if they resisted, a statement of probable cause says.
