UPDATE: Firefighter critically injured in collision on I-5 South in Federal Way

UPDATE: 11 a.m. A 52-year-old South King Fire & Rescue firefighter was struck by a car and critically injured while investigating a Sunday morning collision on Interstate 5 in Federal Way.

He was unconscious when he was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he was listed as critical but stable. He suffered severe head and face injuries, collapsed lung and broken arm, according to South King Fire & Rescue.

The accident happened at about 5:30 a.m. just south of South 272nd Street in Federal Way and blocked the two right southbound lanes until 9 a.m., according to the State Patrol.

Julie Spartup, a state patrol spokeswoman, said it appeared that slick roads, fog and speed were factors in the accident that injured the firefighter, though the investigation was ongoing.

At about 5 a.m., a black pick-up traveling southbound on I-5 hit the left barrier and rolled over, coming to rest in the right shoulder. The truck’s two occupants were not injured and left the scene, she said.

South King Fire & Rescue said it dispatched two firefighters and a lieutenant to the scene. While they were assessing the roll-over, a red Chevy in one of the left-hand southbound lanes lost control and skidded into the right shoulder.

The Chevy struck the 52-year-old firefighter and narrowly missed the other firefighter and lieutenant, South King Fire & Rescue said. See full story.
