Family with 10 children homeless after fire

An accidental fire late Friday night on Capitol Hill left a family with 10 children homeless, according to Seattle fire investigators and King 5 news.

Firefighters responded about 11:15 p.m. Friday to reports of a three-story house fire near the 700 block of 15th Avenue and found flames shooting from the basement, Seattle fire officials said.

Firefighters were able to knock down the flames after about 20 minutes, and two people were transported to Harborview Medical Center with minor injuries.

Seattle fire investigators determined the fire started when improperly discarded smoking materials ignited a basement couch.

The Red Cross was called to help the displaced family. King 5 news reported the family included a couple, their nine daughters and a 2-year-old son.

Damage was estimated at $50,000 to the structure of the house, and $20,000 to its contents.
