Fire damages U District apartment this morning

There is not points to locate on the map

A man suffered singed hair early this morning when a fire broke out in his University District apartment, according to the Seattle Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the 5000 block of Brooklyn Avenue Northeast around 3:45 a.m. after several 911 callers reported seeing flames coming from a two-story apartment complex. Firefighters arrived to find flames coming from a first-floor apartment.

Firefighters knocked down the fire within five minutes of arriving. All of the residents were able to evacuate the building safely.

A man who lived in the apartment where the flames began was treated at the scene after his hair was singed while trying to put out the fire with a blanket, the Fire Department said. Paramedics also examined a female occupant of the apartment, but neither person was taken to the hospital.

A fire investigator said the blaze started in combustible materials placed too close to an electric baseboard heater.

Damage to the structure was estimated at $40,000, with another $10,000 in damage to the contents. Damage to a car and motorcycle was estimated at $8,000.
