Firefighters urge fixing fireplaces after Ballard blaze

There is not points to locate on the map

The Seattle Fire Department reminds people to have their chimneys and heating systems inspected now that cooler fall days have arrived.

Fireplaces should be cleaned and repaired, and fires should never be left unattended, the department said in a news release this week.

Nearly 18,000 Americans were taken to emergency rooms in 2009 for injuries related to fireplaces, chimneys and chimney connectors, said the department, citing figures from the National Fire Protection Association.

The reminder came after heat from a smoldering fire in a fireplace sparked a Ballard house fire early Thursday, according to a Seattle fire investigator.

Firefighters were called at 2:10 a.m. to a two-story home in the 2800 block of Northwest 61st Street.

Residents of the house were safely outside when firefighters arrived, and the blaze was under control within 5 minutes. Damage to the home was put at $65,000.
