Guard aiding Seattle trawler as severe storm moves in

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sherman (US COAST GUARD)

UPDATE: The U.S. Coast Guard has reached the Rebecca Irene, and 20 non-essential crew have been transferred to the Cutter Sherman, said Petty Officer 1st Class Sara Francis. Fourteen crew remain on board.

The Sherman will escort the Rebecca Irene, a private vessel is on its way to tow it. The trawler is now 115 nautical miles from Unimak Island, Francis said.

Seas are 6 to 8 feet high, with winds of 21 mph, Francis said. The hurricane force winds should hit in about eight hours, but the Sherman and fishing trawler are well prepared, Francis said.

EARLIER POST: As a severe storm with hurricane force winds moves toward Alaska, the U.S. Coast Guard has sent a vessel to assist a Seattle-based fishing trawler in the Bering Sea.

The 143-foot Rebecca Irene, with 34 people aboard, lost one of its engines and had limited propulsion, the Coast Guard said. The vessel was 138 miles northwest of Unimak Pass.

Hurricane-force winds and high seas were forecast all along the western coast of Alaska, Coast Guard Capt. Daniel Travers said.

The Coast Guard Cutter Sherman was in the area Wednesday to take all non-essential staff from the Rebecca Irene. Another ship was contracted to tow the Rebecca Irene, the Coast Guard said.
