Man shot by Federal Way police this morning

Federal Way police shot and wounded a 33-year-old man early this morning after they said he was combative.

The wounded man, who was not identified by police, was taken to Harborview Medical Center to be treated for gunshot wounds to his leg, according to Federal Way police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock. The four officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave while an outside agency, Renton police, investigate.

Police said they were called to an apartment in the 31700 block of 50th Lane Southwest at 2:40 a.m. for a domestic-violence incident. When officers arrived they were told that the 33-year-old man had been assaulting his roommates; the man had left the home by the time police arrived, according to Schrock.

Police searched a nearby greenbelt and one officer came upon the 33-year-old man.

“The suspect acted irrational, making animal type sounds, and charged the officer. The officer in fear for his life drew his firearm and fired multiple shots,” Schrock said in a news release.

A second officer also fired several  non-fatal shots, according to police. Neither officer was hurt.

Police are investigating whether the man was intoxicated.
