Politics vs. sports at Jane Hague's pub party in Kirkland

Who would have thought county politics could be so … groovy?

Here at the Juanita Pub in Kirkland, we are talking Heart on the jukebox, and a wireless sign-on of “cold beer.”  And yes indeed the beers look big. As for politics, it isn’t much in sight. Sports on the widescreen, locals at the bar.

But for the balloons — red, white and blue, of course — over the pool tables, this could be any Tuesday night anywhere. “Does anyone want to watch the news?” said a barman in his black Juanita Pub tee,. Nope, just sports, thanks.

Tinsel bunting was getting put out by the volunteers, so that made things seem a bit more political. But the snacks! Pu-leeze. We are talking one lonely crudités platter, and you can just picture it: the sawed-off carrots, the broccoli stumps, the pale radishes. Oh, dear.

But the music was getting louder, and even though there was no sign of the candidate yet, nobody seemed to mind.
