Seattle School Board challenger Sharon Peaslee increases lead

Updated vote totals released Wednesday afternoon showed Seattle School Board challenger Sharon Peaslee with her first significant lead over incumbent Peter Maier.

With most of the ballots counted, Peaslee led Maier by 742 votes – 71,373 to 70,631. More importantly, she led by 0.52 percent – just barely over the one-half of one percent margin that would trigger an automatic recount.

Peaslee, an independent writer and producer who founded a math tutoring business on the Eastside before moving to Seattle two years ago, was seen as a longshot to unseat Maier, a one-term incumbent and longtime levy campaign leader.

Last Tuesday, on Election Night, Maier led Peaslee 51.9 percent to 47.7 percent. She has steadily closed the gap since then.

It was unclear Wednesday how many votes were still left to be counted. But with votes tallied from about half of registered voters in King County, it was unlikely there were many.
