Serious injuries in three-car crash near Highway 509

Two people were trapped inside their cars after a head-on collision Friday afternoon involving three vehicles west of Highway 509.

Seattle Fire Department rescue crews had to extricate two of the drivers, one of whom suffered life-threatening injuries, according to police and fire agencies. All three drivers were taken to Harborview Medical Center.

The collision happened about 3:20 p.m. at Olson Place Southwest and Southwest Cambridge Place. Police said the 51-year-old male driver of a Nissan Pathfinder crossed the center line and struck a 1999 Saturn head-on. The Pathfinder then spun around and was struck on the driver’s side by an oncoming Toyota Camry.

The driver of the Camry, a 63-year-old woman, was in serious condition, said Kyle Moore, a spokesman for the fire department. One of the roofs of the cars had to be cut open, he said.

Det. Jeff Kappel, a police spokesman, said a blood sample was taken from the driver of the Pathfinder to test for alcohol or drugs. The road was expected to be closed for several hours for investigation.
