Stubborn wall fire damages Capitol Hill complex

There is not points to locate on the map

A fire in a Capitol Hill apartment complex Friday was caused by a spark when a worker cut through a wall and his saw hit a pipe, the Seattle Fire Department said.

That spark ignited the insulation behind the wall, and flames quickly spread.

The fire began shortly after 4 p.m. in a three-story, early 1900s brick building in the 1100 block of 13th Avenue East.

The fire spread in the walls from the kitchen of a second-floor unit to the unit above it, the department said. Because the building was older, it didn’t have firewalls between the floors.

It took nearly half an hour for firefighters to cut through the walls and put out the flames, the department said.

No one was injured, and occupants of 29 of the units were allowed to return to their homes. The American Red Cross is assisting two residents who could not return to their units, the fire department said.

Damage was put at $45,000. The good news? Firefighters opened a window in the unit below the fire so a four-year-old dog could get fresh air. The pet was not injured.
