Suspect in schools scandal arrested in Florida

Silas Potter Jr., who failed to appear for arraignment yesterday in the Seattle Public Schools financial scandal, was arrested in Tampa, Fla., last night, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.

A sheriff’s detective who handles fugitive cases received a tip on where Potter was staying and relayed it to U.S. Marshals, who took Potter into custody, said sheriff’s spokesman John Urquhart.

Potter, who was accused in a scheme to bilk the Seattle school district out of $250,000, is charged with multiple counts of theft.

A judge issued a warrant for his arrest Tuesday, when Potter didn’t appear at his scheduled arraignment in King County Superior Court.

Two other defendants in the case, David A. Johnson and Lorrie Kay Sorensen, pleaded not guilty.

Potter had headed the district’s small-business assistance program before moving to Florida.

Urqhart said he did not have additional details at this point on Potter’s arrest.

The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office plans to begin extradition proceedings immediately.
