Teen arrested in alleged plot to shoot up Puyallup school Columbine-style

A 14-year-old Puyallup boy has been arrested after police say he tried to recruit seven other youths to carry out a mass shooting at Aylen Junior High School in Puyallup.

Puyallup police Capt. Scott Engle said that the teen was arrested at his home yesterday and booked him into Remann Hall, the Pierce County juvenile detention facility. Police have asked Pierce County prosecutors to consider criminal charges against another two youths believed to be involved, Engle said.

Investigators were tipped yesterday about the teen’s alleged plan to “do a Columbine event at the school,” Engle said. It’s not clear when the teen wanted this event to take place. Engle said he does not believe the youth has a criminal record..

While the lead suspect in the case is not believed to have access to firearms, some of the youths he tried to recruit did, Engle said. Police have seized a computer and cell phones from the 14-year-old’s home as part of the investigation.

Aylen Junior High School is open today but with an increased Puyallup police presence, Engle said.

“We do feel the incident is contained and taken care of. The important part of this is that a student heard something and said something,” Engle said.
