Two men sentenced for Tukwila gang slaying

The hired gunman who fatally shot Hoang Van Nguyen in January 2007 was sentenced Friday to a little over 23 years in prison, according to King County prosecutors.

Jerry Henry Thomas III – who was hired by Quy Nguyen, the leader of the Vietnamese street gang, Young Seattle Boyz, to kill Hoang Nguyen — pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with a firearms enhancement last month, days before he was to stand trial.

The victim was also a member of the gang who was killed because he threatened Quy Nguyen’s power and control of a lucrative, marijuana grow operation, prosecutors said.

Also sentenced Friday was Le Nhu Le, a member of the gang who cut a deal with prosecutors in October and agreed to testify against Nguyen and Thomas. He pleaded guilty to one charge of conspiracy to commit leading organized crime in the Superior Court case, as well as to conspiracy to manufacture marijuana in U.S. District Court in Seattle. Le was sentenced to five years in prison.

Nguyen’s sentencing, which was scheduled for today, was continued to Dec. 16 before Superior Court Judge Julie Spector. Nguyen pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with a firearms enhancement and conspiracy to commit leading organized crime the day after opening statements in his trial last month. Nguyen faces a sentence of 17 to 25 years.
