Victoria Clipper turns back due to weather, passengers may miss dinner

The special Thanksgiving run of the Victoria Clipper had to turn back due to poor weather this afternoon, delaying 230 passengers from getting to Seattle for the holiday.

The Clipper was only 20 minutes out of Victoria when it encountered high winds and waves, making it “very evident that it would not be safe to continue,” said Darrell Bryan, the president of the ferry service.

Clipper Vacations arranged for alternative arrangements for the passengers, but instead of arriving at 3 p.m., they will get in at about 9 p.m.

On a wet and windy Thanksgiving following days of rain, the weather is wreaking havoc on holiday plans across Western Washington. The Snoqualmie and Stevens passes have been closed on and off during the week, though they are open now. Landslides have canceled some train service and, of course, many ferries have been disrupted.

“It’s horrible,” Bryan said.
