Will the 520 Bridge pontoons fit through the Ballard Locks?

With news that 33 massive pontoons are being built in Aberdeen and will be floated to Seattle when they are needed for the Highway 520 Bridge replacement, a questions arises:

Will they fit through the Ballard Locks?

The answer is yes. But it’s going to be a tight squeeze.

The pontoons are 75 feet wide. The Locks are 80 feet across, so the pontoons should fit, but with only 2 1/2 feet to spare on each side.

The pontoons are monstrously big, the largest of them weighing 11,000 tons each. Just preparing a site to build them has transformed a big chunk of land near downtown Aberdeen.

The once-bustling timber town saw its economy dive when the timber industry tanked. When state highway officials held a ceremony there earlier this year to announce that the pontoons would be built in Aberdeen, the town greeted them  with a marching band and welcome signs.
