Wind, rain to hit; snow may follow

We’re in for a wet and breezy day, with winds picking up after dark and the possibility of some snow in the Puget Sound area building Thursday night and into Friday morning.

Winds of 15 to 25 mph in the Puget Sound area will arrive by mid-afternoon Wednesday and increase into the evening, with sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph expected after 7 p.m. and gusts of 40 or higher in some areas, said Jay Albrecht of the Weather Service.

Stronger winds will hit coastal areas, with gusts up to 50 mph expected in Westport and Forks.

Meanwhile, up the passes, two to three feet of snow could fall over the next couple of days. Travelers are advised to check updated pass conditions.

And what about snow down here?

Parts of the Puget Sound could get some snow or a rain-snow mix Thursday night, particularly in the convergence zone that develops around Everett, Albreceht said.

The metro area has a greater chance of snow Thursday night into Friday morning, when snow could fall not just in the convergence zone, but areas of 500 feet or higher. (Point of reference: Queen Anne Hill’s summit is about 450 feet)

“We’re looking at showery precipitation, hit and miss, and yes it could be in the form of snow, so there could be some accumulation in places,” Albrecht said. “But this is not an arctic outbreak in the truest sense.”
