Aki Kurose Middle School wins national attendance competition

Southeast Seattle’s Aki Kurose Middle School Academy has won a national competition by significantly increasing its attendance rates.

Attendance at the school rose 3.7 percent between Oct. 3 and Nov. 18, according to the Get Schooled Foundation, which sponsored the challenge. That topped all of the other 73 schools from 17 states.

“I’m extremely proud of the students, staff and the Aki Kurose community for winning,” wrote Mia Williams, the school’s principal, in a news release earlier this week. “We’re using the momentum, school spirit and the increase in student engagement from the challenge to focus on improving academic achievement school-wide.”

Attendance is a citywide focus this year thanks to a collaborative effort organized by Mayor Mike McGinn’s office.

City Hall is partnering with Get Schooled, the Alliance for Education and the school district administration on the “Be Here, Get There” campaign, with a goal of getting 80 percent of Seattle students to miss fewer than 10 days of school per year. In 2009, just 62 percent met that threshold.

Attendance has been shown to have a large impact on student achievement and graduation rates.
