BRIDGEPORT, Wash. — The Douglas County sheriff’s office says the death of a Bridgeport man appears to be an accidental shooting that occurred when he dropped his gun and it went off, hitting him in the chest.

Undersheriff Don Culp says 75-year-old Reuben M. Whitely died Tuesday night on the way to a hospital.

The Wenatchee World reports he had grabbed his .22-caliber revolver to investigate a noise outside and was at his front door when he accidentally dropped the gun. His wife called 911.
