Burn ban takes effect for Pierce, Snohomish counties

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency issued a burn ban starting at 5 p.m. Sunday for Pierce and Snohomish counties, citing stagnant weather conditions and rising pollution levels.

The agency’s forecasters said evening temperature inversions, calm winds and cold weather will cause air quality to deteriorate through Tuesday.

The “Stage 1” ban means that the use of fireplaces and uncertified wood stoves is prohibited until air quality improves, possibly late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Exceptions are made if a wood stove is a home’s only adequate source of heat.

Outdoor fires also are prohibited, and violations are subject to a $1,000 penalty.
