Car windshield struck by flying trailer tire

A woman driving on Highway 520 this morning remarkably suffered only minor injuries when her windshield was struck by part of a tire and steel rim that flew off a trailer, says the State Patrol.

The driver, a 42-year-old from Kirkland, was heading west on the stretch of highway through Redmond when a piece of steel tire rim and rubber struck her windshield, said State Patrol spokeswoman Julie Startup. The debris came from a trailer attached to a pickup heading east. The woman was struck at 6:35 a.m.

“It was very scary,” Startup said. “It came right through the windshield. Troopers said if it [struck] a little more to the right, it would have struck her directly.”

The woman was cut when the windshield shattered. She was taken to the hospital.

It’s unclear whether the pickup driver, a 39-year-old man from Tacoma, will be cited.
