Eastgate annexation reaches signature goal

The 5,000-resident Eastgate neighborhood on the south side of Interstate 90 has cleared a major hurdle in a drive to become a part of Bellevue, the city that surrounds it.

Owners of 50.47 percent of the area’s assessed value have signed a petition asking to be annexed to the city, just above the required majority, Bellevue Senior Planner Nicholas Matz said Wednesday.

Supporters of annexation organized a door-to-door “blitz” Saturday to collect the required number of additional signatures before Saturday’s deadline. More than 50 volunteers gathered signatures from 128 residents Saturday, and more signatures have continued to arrive by mail, Matz said.

Combined with three smaller neighborhoods nearby that are in various stages of the petition process, Bellevue could add 5,554 citizens through annexation next year if the City Council approves the petitions.
