Family of 7 displaced in Kent apartment fire
Fire investigators say the mishandling of smoking materials caused an apartment to erupt in flames in the East Hill area of Kent early Sunday, leaving a family of seven temporarily without a home.
Firefighters were dispatched to the 27300 block of 129 Avenue Southeast around 9:50 a.m. after receiving reports of a mattress fire.
Upon arriving, firefighters found flames in the upstairs bedroom and bathroom of an apartment and a burning mattress on the ground outside, officials said.
The flames were put out quickly, but the apartment and another nearby unit sustained an estimated $50,000 in damage, according to officials. They cited “improper disposal of smoking materials” as the cause.
The Red Cross is providing shelter to a family of four adults and three children who were displaced by the fire.
A resident of the apartment where the fire occurred reportedly was injured. Officials say she was treated at the scene and taken to a local hospital.
